Bonnie Charlie's noo awa
Safely o'er the friendly main
Mony a heart will break in twa
Should he ne'er come back again.
Will ye no' come back again?
Will ye no' come back again?
Better lo'ed ye canna be
Will ye no' come back again?
Ye trusted in your Hielan' men
They trusted you, dear Charlie
They kent your hiding in the glen
Death or exile braving.
Will ye no' come back again?
Will ye no' come back again?
Better lo'ed ye canna be
Will ye no' come back again?
English bribes were a' in vain
Tho' puir, and puirer, we maurn be
Siller canna buy the heat
That beats aye for thine and thee.
Will ye no' come back again?
Will ye no' come back again?
Better lo'ed ye canna be
Will ye no' come back again?
We watch'd thee in the gloamin' hour
We watch'd thee in the mornin' grey
Tho' thirty thousand pound they gie
Oh, there is nane that wad betray!
Will ye no' come back again?
Will ye no' come back again?
Better lo'ed ye canna be
Will ye no' come back again?
Safely o'er the friendly main
Mony a heart will break in twa
Should he ne'er come back again.
Will ye no' come back again?
Will ye no' come back again?
Better lo'ed ye canna be
Will ye no' come back again?

I stumbled across this Jacobite song in a book of guitar arrangements Irish,Scottish & Border Melodies for Flatpicking Guitar by Bill Brennan (Mel Bay - you can actually download the mp3s that go along with these tunes even if you do not purchase the book)
Playing the dulcimer and zitter have opened up a new understanding for me for open tunings on the guitar. I saw this title and thought "Oh, a love song" and "a chance to experiment with a tuning unfamiliar to me: DBGDGD. When I began to play it, a phrase from an old hymn that I had not sung for years came to my voice: "In the arms of Jesus". In researching the tune I could not find that hymn, but rather another "My Lord Knows the Way Through the Wilderness" which I had never heard. If anyone knows the other that is on the edge of my memory, please let me know. Anyway, I learned that not a lost love, but a lost leader was the object of the singer's pining. Bonnie Prince Charlie, who was in exile in France. Through out the 18th century many in Scotland and England were longing for, and occasionally plotting and fighting for the return of the Stewarts (descendants of James) to return to the throne, ousting the Hapsburgs (the Georges) Here is a short history of the Jacobite rebellions by The Contemplator. This song was composed by Carolina Oliphant (Lady Nairne) using a tune by Neil Gow Jr.
