Old Bangum
Old Bangum, he did hunt and ride.
Dillum down dillum
Sword and a pistol by his side.
Dillum down dillum
Killie kaw, cuddle down, killie call corn
Bangum rid by the riverside.
Three young ladies there he spied.
Tell me now what keeps you here.
We're kept here by a wild boar.
There is a wild boar in these woods
And he eats men`s bones and he drinks their blood
If you would this wild boar see
Blow a blast to come to thee.
Slapped the horn unto his mouth.
Blew a blast both north and south.
Old Bangum, he drew his wooden knife.
He swore he`d take that wild boar`s life.
That boar came out in such a dash.
Split his way through oak and ash.
They fought four hours in that day.
Alas that wild boar ran away.
Bangum followed him to his den.
Saw the bones of a thousand men.
Old Bangum, did you win or lose?
He swore by God he`d won his shoes
this is a combination of Ellen Gozion's version and a version derived from Child #18
Sir Lionel
even thought to be related to King Arthur`s boar fight
(before Lancelot et al got tacked onto Arthur`s legend, he did
things like hunt killer boars and kings)
some believe the wooden knife indicates that this was a witch in the form of a boar rather than a natural beast – similar to the vampire superstitions about killing them with wooden stake.
